Vibration health effects and work

Vibration and its health effects have been discussed since the 1950’s. The best studies on the health effects of vibration have compared those who are exposed to vibration with those who are not.

Most research is on professional drivers as they are readily available and can be followed over time. The vibration needs to be measured objectively. This is more readily done now with the appropriate advice and technical knowledge such as from Gary Foster - see below.

The most common health effect from vibration is low back pain. We most commonly see this in heavy vehicle operators such as drivers, plant operators or miners.

Vibration has also associated with neck and shoulder, gastrointestinal system, urogenital system, hearing system, nervous system.

The evidence is strongest for vibration health effects on the low back.
