Paracetamol for pain
Paracetamol for chronic pain
With the recent withdrawal of rofecoxib (Vioxx) from the market worldwide there has been renewed interest in safe alternatives to anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Paracetamol.
A recent study from Queensland published in the American Journal of Therapeutics. January/February 2005:
More
showed that Paracetamol was often equally or more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs often costing much more money and with more serious side-effects such as gastric irritation, ulcers and bleeding.
The cost of Paracetamol is much lower because it is available as generic medication at as low as 80c per 24 tablets. At maximum dose this would be up to 27c per day – very cheap. A drug such as Celebrex which is similar to Vioxx and still very commonly prescribed is up to $2.00 per day at maximum dose. Other anti-inflammatory drugs can be cheaper but all carry the risk of gastric problems.
