Steroids for acute sinusitis?

As we are all well aware acute sinusitis is a very common problem and one of the most common conditions seen in general practice.

Some people have suggested that nasal sprays containing cortisone-type preparations such as Beconase may help to relieve sinusitis and speed up the recovery. These types of preparations have an anti-inflammatory effect on the nose.

A recent systematic review Link.. looked at four well-conducted randomised trials with nearly 2000 people involved. They showed that there was a moderate effect of these preparations on the recovery and the symptomatic improvement in sinusitis.

Side-effects (such as nose bleeds, or rarely fungal infections) are not common but have been described with these preparations.

It is gratifying to see that they seem to be beneficial, as many people suffer with this condition and would welcome some form of relief. If you are concerned or require more information please talk to your doctor.
