Pandemic Planning for Avian and Swine flu
What is swine flu?
Swine influenza (swine flu) is a viral respiratory disease from pigs. It is caused by type A influenza virus which causes regular outbreaks in pigs. Humans don't normally catch swine flu, but it can happen and has now become a global pandemic.
General information about swine flu
The World Health Organization (WHO)confirmed at least some of the cases are a new version of the H1N1 strain of influenza type A which is the same one that causes seasonal outbreaks of flu in humans. The latest H1N1 is different as it contains genetic material that is usually found in the virus that affects humans, birds and pigs.
Symptoms of swine flu are like human flu. They include fever, cough, sore throat, aches, headaches, chills and tiredness. Some people get diarrhoea/vomiting. Pneumonia and lung failure have occurred. It can be fatal.
